Competitions


There are four "formal" competitions in the season, judged by external experts, and other informal competitions, judged by members.
The formal competitions are the 1st & 2nd ("monthly") competitions, the annual (final) competition, and the Harmony Trophy competition.
There are a variety of trophies .

Competitions have different sections:

  1. Colour Prints - Open, ie Any Subject
  2. Monochrome Prints - Open, ie Any Subject
  3. Digital images - Open, ie Any Subject
  4. Digital images on a Special Subject: in most competitions judged individually

We have a beginners and an advanced category of entrant for Colour Prints, Monochrome Prints and Digital images (but not Special Subject and Harmony trophy).

Digital Images should be of max width 1600 pixels, max height 1200 pixels.
They should be in JPG format in sRGB colour space, which is the most common output from a camera or phone.

For the Harmony Trophy you need to enter three digital images
For the other competitions you can enter up to SIX items, with no more than TWO in each section.

Competition rules and help

Entering a competition

  • Click on Aspects of a photograph that a competition judge may mention for ideas on what may influence judges' decisions.
  • Origin & manipulation of images - all parts of the final image must have been photographed by the entrant
  • Subjects & titles - Subjects and titles - each entry must have a title to identify it.
  • Entrance fee (from Sept 2024) - £2 per image, maximum £8 per competition (so if you enter a maximum of 6 images then you benefit from 2 free entries). Free for your first time
  • Provide a list of your entries - ideally on the printable competition entry form - PDF

Submitting digital images

  • Digital Images should be of max width 1600 pixels, max height 1200 pixels.
  • They should be in JPG format in sRGB colour space, which is the most common output from a camera or phone.
  • HELP on resizing, converting to sRGB and saving in JPG format
  • Don't display your name in the image file - your entry can only be identified by its title
  • Give your images to the Competition Secretary on a memory stick, camera memory card , or by email, or by WeTransfer, Dropbox etc
  • HELP on sending your images.

Submitting prints

  • You don't have to print your own images - any person or company can print your images, so long as they don't edit them beyond your own work
  • Minimum size of prints - 7 inches (18 cms) along the longest edge of a print (before mounting)
  • Prints should be mounted on board (no bigger than 20 x 16 inches, 50 x 40 cm), and titled on the back.
  • Don't put your name on the front or back of a print

Beginners and Advanced entrants

  • All new members to the club are placed in the Beginners' sections for all competitions, unless they feel that their skills level should be in the Advanced section for any category.
  • You can be in the Advanced section for digital images and in the Beginners section for Colour and Mono Prints or vice versa.
  • We trust your decision of which section you would like to be entered into.
  • Beginners who have received a Commended award 3 times in the same category will then move into the Advanced section, just for the category that received the commended awards.
