There is a Guide to Good Judging Practice, by the Glasgow District Photographic Union - useful to competition entrants as well as judges. Judges tend to score out of 20, eg: 10-12 (technical flaws, poor composition, no interesting features, can't see why it was made), 13-14 (competent but lacking strong interest), 15 -17 (well photographed, minor shortcomings), 18-20 (excellently photographed, PLUS visually striking, makes you think, stirs emotions, evokes a mood ...).
Although you may submit up to 54 different photographs during the year, it is possible to get a high total score with only 24 different photographs. These would be 6 colour prints, 6 monochrome prints, 6 digital images (3 suitable for the final Special Subject), and 6 Special Subject prints. 3 of each category would be submitted to each of the 1st and 2nd competitions. For the final competition the best 3 colour and monochrome prints would be resubmitted, the 3 Special Subject digital images put in for the Harmony Trophy, and the remaining 3 digital images into the Any Subject slides section.
There are three competitions in the season.
They are 1st & 2nd competitions and an annual (final) competition.
There are a variety of prizes.
Each competition has four sections:
With the exception of the annual competition, entries shall only be submitted once in any club competition. The image must have been photographed by the competition entrant, but there is no restriction on when the photograph was taken or processed, or on how it was processed.
Entries for the annual competition can have been submitted in a previous club competition but not in a previous annual competition.
There is a competition entrance fee - £1.50 per section, maximum £5 per competition. Fees contribute towards the cost of running the competitions.
A list of entries should be handed to the competition secretary.
All prints should be mounted.
Minimum size of prints - 7 inches (approx 18 cms.) along longest edge of print (before mounting).
Maximum size of prints including mount 20 inches (approx. 50 cms.) x 16 inches (approx. 40 cms).
Prints should be titled on the rear of the mount and if ambiguous, the top edge marked.
The rear of the mount should also show which competition and section it is for. Do not put your name on it. Each photographer is identified to the judge only for special subject sections, and then only by a code number.
Digital Images should be in JPG format in sRGB colour space, max width 1400 pixels, max height 1050 pixels. The image files should be named "filemname.jpg", where "filename" is the title of the image without spaces. You can substitute dashes or underscores for spaces if you wish. Please abbreviate if the title is longer than 15 characters. Images should be handed in on CD. Please ask if you would like help in submitting images.
Dates and judges to be confirmed.
